The good side of him sealed parts of his bodies in some chests (imitating the bronze coffin), hoping that his corrupted body will not contaminate others. Later on, when the evil side of him retrieved all his body parts, he ascended to the Immortal Emperor level but SH also caught up soon after.

In the third (last) book of the trilogy, the author revealed the origin of the bronze coffin. During the beginning of time, a top level powerhouse above the Immortal Emperor level in another world was corrupted by dark forces and before he died, he sealed his body in the bronze coffin and that was the source of dark power that spread over the entire universe/multiverse. However, over the hundreds of millions of years, nothing is left in the bronze coffin but it still retains its tremendous power and mystery.

Just like the Immortal Emperor level below it: a half-Immortal Emperor is already like a pseudo Immortal Emperor. It's already beyond the reach of Immortal Kings.

Why the inconsistency? Well, let's just say, the author decided to expand the cultivation levels as he went. He started writing the second book first: Shrouding the Heavens. In that book, the highest level is called a Red Dust Immortal which is just below Immortal King level. Later when he wrote PW (which is the prequel or the first book of the trilogy, he increased the levels by two because the premise of StH is that the MC needed SH's help to fight the dark forces in his time therefore SH's level has to be higher than Ye Fan (the MC for StH) In the last book, the author up the ante and created two more cultivation levels on top of Immortal Emperor, just to close this novel.
